Spud The Hedgehog update

spud the hedgehog

Sad Spud the hedgehog came to Tiggywinkles last August with not one spine. A totally bald little thing, he had no hair, no spines and was really quite odd looking, so ugly he was cute.

He had all the usual tests and treatments for the skin conditions we see so often at Tiggywinkles, but with no improvements.

All the tests and biopsies came back negative.

More treatment and more tests did nothing to improve his condition.

He was starting to become quite an enigma.

A national appeal for help brought in a huge response from the obvious suggestions which had already been tried, to the bizarre (such as peeing on him or making him a wig) which we decided to just keep in mind!

Several kind souls sent in their own treatments and ointments which they hoped would help poor Spud.

A variety of treatments were considered and a regime devised involving warm baths, massaging in skin emoluments and further ivermectin courses of treatment.

And it's working!

Spud has been growing spines for the past few weeks, slowly admittedly, but they are growing and staying and he is starting to look like a hedgehog again. Not only the spines but
fur too.

We think that Spud had a particularly virulent form of sarcoptic mange, and it was only
the third treatment of ivermectin and other treatments that seemed to have made the difference.

He still has pretty flaky skin and doesn't have anything like enough spines, but he's getting better each day. His daily regime of warm baths and baby oil massage is continuing and who knows, he may even get his chance to get back into the wild.

You can see Spud when he was featured on BBC's the One Show at http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow/high
